Glendalough Monastic Site

Glendalough

Glendalough comes from the Irish “Gleann Da’ Locha” which means “The valley of the two lakes”. It’s a beautiful monastic site which was founded in the early 6th century by St Kevin. The site had been sacred in pre-Christian Celtic times: story has it that farmers drove their cattle through the water at Beltaine to keep them healthy for the rest of the year.

St Kevin was attracted to the natural beauty of Glendalough which is still there to be experienced.

Join me on the day and uncover the stories around the monastic site, learn about the Round Tower and High Cross of St Kevin and the sacred trees of Ireland.

“While he was meditating, a blackbird laid an egg in one of his outstretched hands. He left his hand outstretched until the egg hatched, demonstrating great discipline and compassion”
